Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The largest classical marble temple was at Ephesus in Asia Minor. It was dedicated to the Greek goddess, Artemis (Roman Diana), in this case in her role as a fertility icon. The Greek builders were inspired by monumental Egyptian architecture, and even adapted and improved some of their technologies. The result was a beautifully proportioned, yet huge, center of worship for the pagan people of its time.
