Petra & the Silk Road
Petra, in present-day Jordan, means "rock" because this city was carved out of sandstone walls by Arabic ancestors, called Nabbateans, as an oasis refuge on the famous Silk Road. Ancient China was the only country that knew the secret of making highly valued silk cloth, which was traded across the Silk Road on Asian deserts all the way to Rome. This exchange promoted some of the world's first great cultural interactions between the East and the West, including that of Marco Polo.
