America's Quest for Freedom[series info]
Freedom and Repression in Colonial America
The Mayflower Pilgrims and Jamestown colony revealed some of the first conflicts between the European and Native American views of freedom. The freedoms created by the House of Burgesses are contrasted with the introduction of slavery and the Puritan attempts to form theocracies. These contradictions expose conflicts over freedom among whites themselves, as well as between them and other groups.
