What began as a climate of sentiments for liberty condensed in the writings of Thomas Paine, inspiring colonial men, as well as women and some slaves, to become Revolutionary freedom fighters. The fervor necessary to win this unexpected victory set in motion the growing civil rights movements of the next two centuries.
