Beyond Borders

This program begins in the Exploratorium with the children enjoying Danish kringle and discussing what interested them the most in the Cultural Horizons video series. They realize that many things connect them to people beyond Wisconsin and the United States, including food, music, trade, travel, and - sadly - war and terrorist acts. Miss White reminds the children how important it is not to judge a group by the actions of one member, and challenges them to find examples of young people reaching across borders to help others. They learn about a student at Milwaukee`s St. Joan Antida High School who has decided to support her Muslim friends and fight stereotypes by wearing a Muslim headscarf. The children also discover young people who are fostering change by using the Internet to make friends in Japan, supporting global environmental efforts by participating in an art exchange, and raising money to provide everyday supplies to a Guatemalan child in need.
