PHOX and More Bands You Should Know

In January 2013, 30 Minute Music Hour host/producer Andy Moore announced that PHOX, an emerging musical group with roots in Baraboo, would perform for our little half-hour music program. His memo to WPT staff read, “Our show has also featured acts that will soon “break out” to national and international audiences. PHOX, a vocal-centric pop band from Madison, is surely one.”

Image of PHOXPHOX’s “break out” is happening now! NPR’s popular “First Listen” series is currently featuring the band’s debut self-titled album. By debuting their album on “First Listen,” PHOX joins the company of Willie Nelson, Bon Iver, Mavis Staples, David Byrne and plenty more established artists who have launched albums via NPR.

Long-Distance Love on a Shoestring Budget

This week I talk to Michael Noens about his feature film “Two Days in February.” Noens wrote and directed this film about a break up between young lovers, and he acknowledges that this drama-romance is semi-autobiographical.

Lead characters Val and Grant are desperately trying to figure out how to make their long distance relationship work and ultimately decide if it’s even worth saving at all. Grant tries to deal with the impending break up by escaping into his past and consulting a former girlfriend. Whether Grant’s ex is really physically with him or a figment of his imagination is for the viewer to decide. It’s an interesting choice and one that will keep the audience guessing.

A Still from Two Days in FebruaryA native of the Chicago ‘burbs, Michael is a good interview and as with all of our guests, very passionate about film. What sets him apart, in my opinion, is his work ethic. As a member of the first graduating class of Chicago’s Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, Noens has directed seven feature films and two short films since 2007. Anyone who has made an indie or is an informed viewer knows what an insane pace that is. And given that most are created on shoestring budgets, one has to admire his love for his craft. Check out his film and a great discussion beforehand this Friday night on Wisconsin Public Television. Hope to see you then!

Director’s Cut “Two Days in February” airs 10 p.m. Friday, June 13. Watch the full interview with director/writer Michael Noens now to learn a thing or two about altering light in post-edit and acquiring music rights the fun way.

Finding Private Gordon

Last year on WPT’s University Place, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison outlined their search for the missing remains of United States Army Private Lawrence Gordon who was killed in action at Normandy in World War II.

Through their work, his remains have been found and positively identified in France and are arriving in Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon with a full escort of honor guards, the Wisconsin State Patrol and Wisconsin Patriot Guard Riders for a forensic examination that will further help his family learn more about how he perished in battle.

Private Gordon will then travel to his final resting place in Saskatchewan.

Watch the University Place presentation below and read more about the successful recovery of his remains and their return online now.
