A Cinderella Story

Lady Edith

Lady Edith in Season 4 Episode 5

If your Sunday New York Times is still folded in its blue overnight bag, we advise you tear it open and flip to the fashion section. And if you don’t get the Times, it’s likely you can go to any coffee shop and find the fashion section discarded somewhere next to the local paper’s classifieds. Or you can just click this link.

What you’ll find is an exposé on “The Transformation of Lady Edith” that traces Edith (played by Laura Carmichael) from her disadvantaged youth in Season 1 to her fashionable coming-of-age in London this season.

In the article, Penny Lovell, Laura Carmichael’s stylist, compares Edith to Cinderella. “It’s so interesting to see Edith become stronger and make some bolder wardrobe choices,” she said. “She’s a character who can will herself into being beautiful, and people will always find that interesting.”

Before Season 4, Mary (Michelle Dockery) received a lot of attention for her elegant fashion. With all the hype back then, who would have thought her sister would be the one in the spotlight come mid season? Let’s hope this storyline persists and we don’t find ourselves commenting on the misfortunes of Lady Edith after the finale.
