The Mississippi River Region
An overview of the history and geographical significance of the Mississippi River Region. The first European settlers came from Spain and France to explore this region in the mid 1500s to late 1600s. Because of its river connection, this region was a strategic area for the northern and the southern states during the Civil War. With its river highways, this region experienced a rapid development in product trade, manufacturing, and agriculture. States covered in this program: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee.
