A Brief Look at Wisconsin's Agricultural History

Beginning with the first pioneer farmers from New England, followed by waves of European immigrants, Wisconsin agriculture has changed dramatically since Wisconsin became a state in 1848. First a wheat growing state, Wisconsin moved into dairying after the Civil War. Much remained the same until after World War II, profound changes have occurred since, as small family farms began disappearing and rural communities transformed. A question to ponder--what of the old is worthy of retaining?
