America's Quest for Freedom[series info]
Freedoms Gained and Lost in the Gilded Age
After the Civil War, the country expands so rapidly that this period is dubbed "the Gilded Age." Huge wealth is amassed by some "robber barons" and middle class living standards begin to increase after the transcontinental railroad is completed. But, the frontier soon closes, Native Americans surrender to reservations, most African Americans resign themselves to poverty, and immigrants pack into fetid slums. Not everyone had won freedom.
