Here and Now rundown

Hi there all, sorry for the delay in posting this. I’m filling in for Frederica today on the program and here’s what we have for you.

We’ll ask freshmen Rep. Amy Loudenbeck (R-Clinton) and Rep. Janis Ringhand (D-Evansville) whether they took more than extra calories away from Gov. Walker’s Beer and Brat Summit this week. The two have adjoining districts and should, in theory, share common interests. We’ll explore that topic with them.

Also, we’ll hear from UW-La Crosse Political Science Prof. Joe Heim and UW-Oshkosh Political Science Prof. James Simmons about their perspective of what the recall looked like from their neighborhoods. Plus, we’ll look forward to the upcoming U.S. Senate race and Presidential races here in Wisconsin.

UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Michael Lovell joins us to discuss his institution taking the lead in a five-campus UW-System initiative to help solve the world’s water crisis. The World Bank reports 40 percent of the world, more than two billion people, have no access to clean water or sanitation. We’ll see how UW-M seeks to help address that problem. Here’s a link to a good story about the initiative. We’ll also speak with him about the recent tuition hikes passed by the Board of Regents.

Finally, Watergate scholar and UW-Madison Emeritus Prof. Stanley Kutler comes back to our Vilas Hall studios to discuss the 40th anniversary of the actual Watergate burglary. I love the guy as he’s absolutely fascinating. His “Wars of Watergate” book about the events that brought down President Richard Nixon has a new preface. We’ll speak with him about the legacy of that event and whether we’re all now just a little more suspicious of our elected officials as a result.

Here and Now airs statewide on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
