Tonight’s program

Hello there everyone, I’m filling in again for Frederica tonight on Here and Now.

Prof. Charles Franklin

Here’s what we have for you. We’ll go inside the numbers with visiting Marquette University Law School Professor Charles Franklin whose poll out this week is the first independent post-recall election snapshot of where Wisconsin voters are at. He looked at the Republican U.S. Senate primary, any of those four candidates against the Democratic nominee, Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) and also some interesting questions regarding camaraderie among the two political parties.

Speaking of politics, my colleague Zac Schultz attended Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s visit to Wisconsin earlier this week. He’ll share with you thoughts from both parties on how the race for president here in Wisconsin will shake out.

We’ll explore the UW-System’s new pioneering “flexible degree” plan designed to get more college degrees in the hands of the state’s adult learners. It’s estimated that 700,000 or one in every five Wisconsin adults has some college credit, but never finished their studies. This plan, championed by Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) and UW-System President Kevin Reilly, aims to increase the number of Wisconsin residents with college degrees and in turn, improve their job prospects and economic lots in life. UW-Colleges and Extension Chancellor Ray Cross, the individual set to put the flexible degree program into action, will join us and we’ll also hear from UW-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford for a campus perspective on the idea.

Finally, we’ll turn to the state’s agricultural economy, specifically those crops which are struggling. This week, a disaster declaration went out for Wisconsin’s maple syrup industry which was clobbered by the warmer winter. Also, it looks troubling for many apple orchards and cherry growers throughout the state. We’ll bring in Anna Maenner with the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association and the Wisconsin Berries Association to discuss the problem.

Here and Now airs statewide tonight at 7:30 p.m.
