Recall legislation likely won’t pass

Since our post this morning about Sen. Mary Lazich’s (R-New Berlin) legislation to permit any potential recall election next year to take place under the new legislative districts drawn earlier in 2011 by a GOP majority, we’ve heard from at least one Republican who won’t vote for the measure.

Sen. Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center)

Sen. Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center) told the Associated Press he did not agree with Lazich’s proposal. Since the recalls this past summer, Republicans control a 17-16 majority in the Senate chamber, so if one member like Schultz opposes a measure and the Democrats unite to fight it, it does not have the votes to pass.

“I’m not going to vote for it because the people who sent me to Madison are the ones who should decide whether I ought to be recalled or not,” Schultz told the AP.

Lazich’s bill was introduced on Friday and will have its first hearing in the Senate Transportation and Elections Committee within the hour.
