The Year That Was

As I write this our Reporter/Anchor Frederica Freyberg is editing together a special report for our year-end special edition of Here and Now. Our December 30 episode will include Frederica’s retrospective of the past political year. And what a year it’s been. By any measure, an historic one.

Frederica is reviewing hours and hours of tape to create her report. She’s telling the story of the extraordinary events of the past year by stitching together sound clips of the actual events themselves, without written narration. Many people didn’t notice but we were the first news operation to know that the Democratic State Senators were, literally, leaving the building in order to stall the budget repair deliberations. Frederica had snagged Senator Cullen in a Capitol hallway to ask him about a totally unrelated matter: the passing of former State Supreme Court Justice William Bablitch. Cullen was gracious in responding to the death of his friend but the Senator was also clearly in a hurry at that moment.

“Where are you going,” Frederica asked. “We’re leaving town,” Cullen answered. And so set off another flight of extraordinary events that had citizens hanging onto their seats and the news media scrambling. Again, Frederica’s report will air on Friday night, December 30.
